Shopping and Resting

Today we decided to take it easy since we will have 2 days of heaving touring on Friday and Saturday. We ventured out via the subway again to try our hand at a little shopping. We went to the XiuShui Jie market, it is commonly known as the ‘Silk Market’ though there is not much silk there. Our tour book describes it as a ‘crowded maze of stalls’ and yeah that’s pretty much what it is. Everything is very close and the sales women are aggressive…one even patted my tush to get my attention! Yikes! I heard many say to me “Pretty lady, want to buy a shirt? Want to buy jeans?” So it is basically like the Hutong tours from the previous day, keep walking, don’t make eye contact, and just say no. We did make one purchase of 4 North Face jackets and eventually got a pretty good deal on them…but boy did we have to haggle! My inclination after our purchase was to leave as quickly as I could and we did.

For the rest of the day we are going to watch the traffic from our hotel room window and figure out how to get our new jackets in our checked luggage without going over our 44 pound limit. We’ve attached a brief video of the traffic below for you to enjoy. Tomorrow we will tour the Summer Palace, the Beijing Zoo, and the Temple of Heaven…maybe in the rain. The forecast is calling for rain so we’ll see how it goes. We will also go to an acrobatic show in the evening. Don’t be surprised if we don’t post until we arrive in Nanning, our next two to three days will be busy ones!

Bye for now!

Hello! Wow...it sounds like you are already having a wonderful trip! We craked up at the video of the Beijing traffic..the view was oh so familiar to us! I watched it for 3 hours the night we arrived there! The Thai restaurant is pretty good that Micheal probably told you about..at the entrance to the mall where you buy water..also there is a McDonalds about one block down fron your hotel in case you need American food! We can't wait to see the new addition and are wishing that we were there again! Tell all of the fellow Nov. yahoo people that I am thinking of them! Love to all...and still no rain here in Huntersville!

I love your blog! I really feel like we are a part of this adventure. How are Jacob and Julia doing, so far? We're thinking of and praying for you all. (PS - Krista, your niece got her ears pierced!)
